About this course
This advanced-level course is the first of its kind in the UK and has been specifically tailored for contractors, but also valuable for design professionals. Successful retrofits require close collaboration between design and construction, and this course provides the essential knowledge and tools to bridge that gap.
You'll learn the key elements of delivering deep fabric retrofits, moisture management, airtightness, and more, while tackling the unique challenges of retrofit projects. This prepares you to solve on-site problems and deliver high-quality results.
Designed and taught by experienced trainers with hands-on retrofit expertise, the course is suited for those with a foundational understanding of Passivhaus.
For Contractors: Retrofits are full of risks but with the right approach it can be managed. Learn how to plan, manage, and execute a successful retrofit ensuring high-quality outcomes.
For Designers & Consultants: Gain insights into assessing buildability, supporting contractors effectively, and understanding the practical implications of your designs.

Course Structure
Through a blend of case studies, problem-solving exercises, and expert guidance, you will deepen your understanding of retrofit principles and their application. Throughout the course, you'll work on a project that mirrors real-world retrofit scenarios. Upon completion, you'll be confident in your ability to plan, cost, and manage retrofits, even when unexpected challenges arise.
By the end of the course, you will:
- Understand the EnerPHit and other retrofit standards.
- Explore critical topics such as insulation, moisture, airtightness, thermal bridging, ventilation, and heat pumps.
- Gain practical knowledge and skills to minimize risks and ensure successful project delivery on-site.
This course consists of four live, interactive online sessions led by experienced Passivhaus trainers:
Session 1: Introduction to retrofit, whole building approaches, and moisture theory.
Session 2: Exploration of moisture risk, insulation, and problem areas in retrofits.
Session 3: Address thermal bridging, airtightness, building services, and practical challenges on-site.
Session 4: Wrap up your case study homework through an in-depth tutorial, and explore what happens in reality when a project gets to site.
