The Passivhaus standard is aimed at reducing energy in use, which forms the focus of this course, but we will also cover design strategies for reduced embodied energy and construction waste. Additionally, we will look at both domestic and non-domestic examples, and whilst the focus is new build, the approaches taught will be a useful basis for retrofit.&nbsp;&nbsp;
All trainers are active practitioners currently working in the Passivhaus sector, sharing their experience of best practice and tackling the real issues that projects may encounter.&nbsp;

We have created an introductory course that includes everything our trainers have learned over years of designing and building Passivhaus and low-energy buildings. Using a range of real-life buildings of various types and sizes, we bring concepts to life through the learning experience.

This course comprises of 4 modules over 2 weeks, each with a self-study block of approximately 4 hours, the self-study needs to be completed before taking part in a live, online 2 hours workshop, where you’ll discuss the knowledge to projects with the group and one of our experienced trainers, who will check learning and test the concepts in real-life situations.

We teach the core concepts behind the Passivhaus standard, considerations and methodologies for its implementation and the use of the Passivhaus Planning Package (PHPP) for achieving low energy performance. This course will teach you how to bring this learning to your projects as well as prepare you for the Certified Passivhaus Designer/Consultant exam.

<li>Our Passivhaus Designer course is split into distinct modules to guide your learning and build knowledge as we progress through the syllabus. The total study time commitment needed is 100 hours, with 60 hours delivered as live webinars across 7 weeks, and 40 hours of self-study during that time.</li>
<li>The course modules run on a part time basis of up to 3 days per week, with live sessions starting at 9:30am. There is up to 4 hours of live teaching each day plus a requirement for some additional homework and self-study during the week.</li>
<li>Each session is run by two of our experienced Passivhaus trainers.</li>
<li>Our homework exercises are designed to check your understanding from live sessions.&nbsp;Trainers will respond to your homework and answer your questions via a dedicated forum.</li>

Module 1: Introduction
Passivhaus Bitesize (study time: 20 hours over 2 weeks)
To make sure everyone is up to speed with the basics we start with our Passivhaus Bitesize course to take you through low energy design principles and essential concepts. There are 12 hours of self-study to complete in your own time over two weeks, plus 4 live online workshops to check and deepen learning (8 hours total).
NOTE: If you have already completed the Passivhaus Bitesize course separately please get in touch with the team to discuss.
Building Physics Basics (study time: 3 hours)
We provide self-study resources for a short introduction to building physics, working through the essential equations you will encounter on this course.

Module 2: Fabric (study time: 30 hours, 2 weeks)
The Fabric module explores concepts of building physics including heat transfer, the energy balance of buildings and what is necessary to ensure thermal comfort and avoid summer overheating, plus an exploration of how each of the required values can be calculated and what this means in practice for building design. At each stage, practical construction examples and guidance provide context to the science. Through 24 hours of live webinars over 2 weeks plus 6 hours of self-study, we explore elements of building physics, discuss how Passivhaus construction differs to standard practice, with a focus on achieving airtightness and thermal bridge free construction, and understand how successful design follows through to what happens on site.

Module 3: Building Services for Passivhaus (study time: 15 hours, 1 week)
This module covers the concepts, calculations and commissioning for ventilation design, heating systems and hot water distribution and a review of Primary Energy Renewable, through 12 hours of live webinars and 3 hours of self-study. We'll explore different elements of building services used in Passivhaus, essential learning regardless of whether you are a services engineer or not. If you're not a building services engineer we want you to be able to interrogate services design at a high level and understand how services requirements can influence the building design. If you are involved in services design you'll learn what's different to business as usual. This module covers the concepts, calculations and commissioning for ventilation design, heating systems and hot water distribution and a review of Primary Energy Renewable.

Module 4: PHPP - Introduction to Passivhaus Planning Package software (study time: 18 hours, 1 week)
Bringing together learning from the previous modules, we will guide you through completing a whole PHPP spreadsheet, allowing you to develop your understanding of the inputs, parameters and implications for building design. This module has 10 hours of live teaching and tutorials and approximately 8 hours of self-study.

Module 5: Exam Preparation (study time approx. 16 hours, 1 week)
The final module will prepare you fully for the exam. A short self-study module (4 hours) teaches you essential economics in preparation for the Passivhaus exam, followed by a live revision session (4 hours)&nbsp;to recap on the core concepts and guide you through what to expect during the exam itself and exam technique and tips. We provide plenty of support, practice questions and a mock exam. There will be small-group tutorials at the end to cover any specific areas of concern.
Final exam (3 hour online exam, open book)
